An agent handoff is the transfer of a task from one AI agent to another agent or to a human, passing along context so the next handler can continue without restarting.

Clean handoffs preserve conversation history and intermediate state, which is what prevents customers from having to repeat themselves on escalation.

Handoff design is central to both multi-agent teams and human-in-the-loop systems.
