An autonomous agent is an AI agent that completes a task end-to-end with little or no human intervention, deciding its own steps within defined guardrails.

Autonomy is a spectrum: most production agents combine autonomous execution with human-in-the-loop checkpoints for high-stakes actions.

The higher the autonomy, the more important an outcome benchmark becomes, since there is no human reviewing each step.
